MRV Census FAQs

Question
: I own a second home. Do I need to complete a second Census form?

Answer: Yes!

See this flyer from the Census for directions on how to complete a form for your second home. While the goal of the Census is to count people, accounting for all housing properties is important too. Now that you can complete the Census online, filling out forms for additional properties has never been quicker or easier!

Question: Why is my town’s self-response rate so low?

Answer: There are two main reasons self-response rates in the Mad River Valley are relatively low.

1.  Second Homes. Over half of the homes in Warren, Waitsfield and Fayston are seasonal or second homes; self-response rates are calculated using housing units, meaning the response rate will be artificially low until second homeowners complete a census form for that property (see the directions above) or a field worker has confirmed the property’s status.
2.  P.O. Boxes. Invitations to complete the Census are not mailed to P.O. boxes. Although they are not required to complete the form, folks may be unaware the Census has started without the notice.

Question: I have concerns about sharing my information through the Census.

Answer: Your data are safe, secure, and protected by federal law.

Responses cannot be shared with law enforcement, immigration agencies, or housing authorities. Find more information about the Census and confidentiality here.

Question: I haven’t received a Census invitation in the mail. How can I still complete the Census?

Answer: No invitation or ID is needed to complete the Census!

For the first time, you can now respond online or over the phone. When responding online, you will be prompted to enter your Census ID – just click “If you do not have a Census ID, click here.”
